What began as an exploration rooted deeply in nanotechnology has since grown into one of our lab’s core enabling technologies. The soft electrodes developed in the lab—and later commercialized through X-trodes—have become a foundational tool across a wide range of research directions.

Over the years, we’ve relied on this technology in numerous projects, from decoding facial expressions and recognizing human gestures, to analyzing sleep patterns, quantifying cognitive load, and delivering precise electrical stimulation. Its versatility and comfort have allowed us to move seamlessly between basic research and real-world applications, supporting experiments that span neuroscience, human–machine interaction, and health.

Revisiting the origins of this work was especially meaningful during the recent Nano Center retreat. Returning to the nano foundations that first shaped the technology was a reminder of how far it has come—and how fundamental those early design choices were to its success. It was both grounding and energizing to reflect on that journey, and to see how nanotechnology continues to quietly power advances far beyond its original scope.
